Congress Party Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack, Calls for Justice, Support for Victims’ Families

Pahalgam

April 24, 2025 | New Delhi – The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has expressed its deep shock and strong condemnation of the brutal terrorist attack that occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. The attack, which targeted innocent tourists, resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives and left more than 20 individuals severely injured. The Congress party extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and stands in solidarity with them during this painful time.

This heartless act of terror, orchestrated by Pakistan-based elements, represents an attack not only on innocent civilians but also on the values that our Republic stands for. The Congress Working Committee condemned the deliberate targeting of Hindus, an effort clearly designed to inflame tensions and further destabilize the peace in the region. In the face of this provocation, the CWC appealed to all citizens for calm and unity, reaffirming the Congress party’s longstanding commitment to combating cross-border terrorism and safeguarding national security.

Immediate Call for Support to Victims’ Families

Congress Leader Advocate Arsalan Khalid has called on the West Bengal state government to provide immediate support to the families of the three victims from Bengal who tragically lost their lives in the attack. He made the following requests to ensure these families are given the necessary support in their time of grief:

“Now is the time for action. We must ensure that the families who have suffered such a tragic loss are not left to fend for themselves,” said Advocate Khalid.

Call for Accountability and Comprehensive Security Review

The Congress Working Committee also demanded a thorough investigation into the intelligence lapses and security failures that allowed such a devastating attack to occur in a region known for its stringent security measures. Pahalgam, a Union Territory directly under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry, is supposed to be a heavily guarded area. The CWC has called for a transparent inquiry to uncover how such an attack could happen and to ensure that justice is served for the victims.

As the Amarnath Yatra approaches, the CWC emphasized the need for enhanced security measures to protect the millions of pilgrims who travel to the region each year. The safety of these pilgrims, along with the local population whose livelihood depends on tourism, must be treated as a national priority.

Paying Tribute to Local Heroes

The Congress party paid tribute to the local ponywalas and tourist guides who acted selflessly during the attack to protect tourists, often at great personal risk. One guide lost his life while trying to save others, demonstrating immense courage in the face of terror. “These brave men are true heroes who embody the spirit of India,” the Congress statement read.

Condemnation of BJP’s Political Opportunism

The Congress Working Committee also expressed its shock at the BJP’s attempt to exploit this tragedy for political gain. “At a time when the nation is mourning, the BJP has resorted to using social media platforms and political proxies to create division and deepen polarization. This is a time for solidarity and unity, not for sowing further discord,” the CWC stated.

A Call for National Unity

In its resolution, the CWC called for a united response from all political parties, communities, and citizens in the fight against terrorism. “While this tragic event has shattered lives, it will not break the spirit of our nation. We must stand united in the face of terror and work towards building a future of peace and security for all,” the Congress party emphasized.
